Sinterklaas: For more information concerning the -partly mythical- ‘Bishop of Myra’ I’d like to suggest a website built and maintained by people in Holland, Michigan, USA : www.stnicholascentre.org gives an extensive overview of Sinterklaas, St Nicholas, and Santa Claus. comprehensive collection of links at: www.sinterklaas.2link.be/  updated 28 Oct 2007.

   - 5 December: Official Birthday of Sinterklaas, allegedly the bishop of Myra (in Turkey), who travels by a small steamer from Spain, and whom especially young children revere. In fact, they donate carrots for his horse and sing songs near the chimney, hoping for little presents to drop into their shoes overnight. The historical bishopric of Myra lies near Bari in the south of Italy; the dress of the ‘Zwarte Pieten’ is based on the uniform worn by pages in Spain, the black face can refer either to the African descent of servants in important Spanish families, or to the fact that ‘Piet’ needs to climb down and up each chimney, which would make anyone pitch black anyhow. Come to think of it, my mother - when we still had a coal fire - told me that the chimney sweep acted as Zwarte Piet, because he had nothing to do in winter as all chimneys are in use. Het Wilhelmus - in Dutch and

in an English translation

Eerste couplet:

Wilhelmus van Nassouwe
ben ick van Duytschen Bloedt,
Den Vaderland ghetrouwe
blijf ick tot inden doet;
Een Prince van Orangien
ben ick vry onverveert,
Den Coninck van Hispangien
heb ick altijd gheeert.

Zesde couplet:

Mijn schilt ende betrouwen
zijt ghy, O Godt, mijn Heer,
Op U soo wil ick bouwen,
verlaet my nimmermeer:
Dat ick doch vroom mag blijven
U dienaar t’aller stond,
Die tyranny verdrijven,
die my mijn hert doorwondt.

First verse:

William of Nassau
of ancient Dutch descent,
I dedicate undying faith
to this land of mine;
A Prince of Orange
am I, undaunted, free,
The King of Spain
I granted lifelong loyalty.

Sixth verse:

My shield and my reliance
art thou, O God, my Lord,
I trust unto Thy guidance,
O leave me not ungirt:
That I may stay pious
servant of Thine for aye,
Drive the tyranny away,
which wounds me my heart.
